Fourth Wall:
Week 1
Brief
"Express the inner life of a building on its outside."
Overview of Week
For the first week of the project, we split research tasks among ourselves. We also tackled communication and coordination as this was our first project as a large group.

Research
For this project, we are collaborating with members of Bold Theatre. We gained a better understanding of the place and people by frequenting the place and reading through their website. We also chatted casually with the people during our visits to familiarise ourselves with the people.
This allowed us to decide on our research methods:

Clearly defined tasks helped take ownership, divide responsibility, and conduct multiple methods in the same timeframe.
AEIOU
We developed the research through multiple visits at Bold. By treating the inside and outside as separate data entries, we were able to get a clear understanding of the surroundings as well.

Directed Storytelling
This was conducted with Eduardo and Sarah, staff at Bold. We wanted to probe about their stories with Bold in a more qualitative manner.

Questions were prepared differently for Sarah and Eduardo as they had different conversations and knowledge.
Potential Surfaces
Since our outcome needs to be expressed on the outside, we identified surfaces of the building that can be worked with. Evander also 3D scanned the inside space for potential use. By observing the windows, vents, railings and other details, we were able to lay out the groundwork for developing ideas.

Creative toolkit - Lego
We (Vanashree, Amita, and I) tried constructing Bold Theatre as a lego model. It helped us identify the things we noticed most about the space like colours, people, rooms, and surrounding elements like signboards. Themes also emerged from the model like playful, casual, makeshift, and open as a space.
It was well-received when we took it back to the theatre and Phoebe said it encapsulates the feeling of Bold well. Being pleased, shared the images of the model on social media.
By conducting this exercise, we were also able to establish better trust and connection among ourselves and also with Phoebe, who works at Bold.

Gallery Visits
Amita, Vanashree, and I visited Rose Easton and After Nature. While we did find them both really abstract, especially the one by Beatrix, we were pleased to gain an understanding of how other artists had navigated similar project work.

Rose Easton, 3:05pm, Sat 14th Feb 2026: We observed how Beatrix had brought the outside of the building to the interiors.

After Nature - 3:41pm, Sat 14th Feb 2026: Featured exhibits that utilised foraged materials from the river and other natural materials.
Next steps
Based on feedback and reflections, we decided to take the following ahead for next week:
Further synthesis of research is required to be able to produce meaningful insights.
Look at how you want to use the technological intervention and how it affects the community. Identify who you are serving.
The story is really important, technology alone won't do it justice.
Be clear about feasibility.
Reflection
One of my key understandings from this week was how 9 people can bring various perspectives and skills to this project. However, it did come with its challenges of communication and ownership.
To resolve the communication issues, I had to play the role of a project manager and set clear times of working and organise meetings based on everyone's availability.
Although we had split tasks and set clear tasks for each individual, there was a lack of ownership and communication. That led to some individuals picking up most of the research work and spillover of task timelines.
