Text Toilet

about.

The Text Toilet is an invitation for anonymity, creative expression, and unfiltered dialogue. The space is used privately, but viewed by the public.

brief.

"Design an experience that reveals the materiality of text. Your work should explore how text functions, feels, and flows; visually, spatially, socially, or somatically. This is an opportunity to experiment with how we read, write, send, decode, and live with text in all its forms."

research.

Although we had visited and researched old London pubs for their historic relevance, the toilets inside were completely contrasting. The public diary and Latrinalia, Victoria M. 2024, was a space we decided to break down further with affinity mapping.

The data gathered from the pubs was mapped into categories and situated in a pub toilet. The legend is depicted on a roll of toilet paper and the data is represented with coloured tissue paper.

product.

Leaning in on the toilet language followed throughout the project, we decided to "borrow" a pub toilet from its usual setting and situate it elsewhere. The use of cardboard, a bucket, and a plastic tub made the model easy to move around. The process below shows the team adding initial text as affordances and then leaving the space for others.

refection.

The Text Toilet was well received. If we could push it further we would have taken it to other public places like parks and intersections. The arrows that were situated in the place did not gather as much attention as we had expected, using a different material might have made a difference.
