Fourth Wall:
Week 3
brief.
"Express the inner life of a building on its outside."
Overview of Week
For this week, we focused on material exploration to find the possibilities and limitations for our project. This involved tech and physical materials.

Material Exploration
Physical Materials
Through the explorations done last week, we decided to test digital mediums. (recap media below)
Digital Materials
By using a projector, speakers, and lights we tested the equipment on a mannequin, cardboard, and white sheets.

Projecting on irregular surfaces was challenging.

Using lights with fabrics added interest to the simple setup.

Cardboard worked well with projecting through glass/acrylic.
Exploring textures and colours for projection screen.
Limitations and Advantages
We analysed what worked and what didn't from the material to use these further for coming up with concepts.

Exploration through Bold
Vantage Points
We identified several locations that allowed viewing of Bold, and to understand areas would provide what kind of visibility to our project.
Places around Bold and how Bold is seen from them.

Low-fidelity prototype of viewing point installed at Bus stop Z, and a film camera cutout prototype (4th image) for viewing.
Playwright - Bold
We were able to attend a playwright rehearsal at Bold. This let us interact with people at Bold and and observe what Bold is to people, how the spaces are used, and who uses it.

Actors enacting with scripts with them.

The audience was just us and we engaged in feedback with the actors and scriptwriter.
Exploring Scale
We were able to utilise a rental space in Bold, The Castle, and used this opportunity to hang clothes from the window. While this was an improvement from the staging done from the windows last week, the large sheet we used seemed really small at the scale of the building. We also noticed that the people at the bus stop looked at us a lot while we were testing.

View of building with cloth from Bus stop Z, where a lot of people waiting were watching us.

Hanging the cloth was challenging and felt considerably small compared to the building.
Directions
We sketched out 3 ideas physically at a small scale with cloth and cardboard at Bold:
Costumes and Characters
Eduardo (Bold staff) had suggested displaying the costumes used by Bold, and we thought of making it more interactive by allowing participants to step in and put them on.

A line of various costumes and participant.

Trying on costumes through cutouts.

Costumes presented from the inside.
Finding Bold
A setup for letting people move through Bold and engage with places showcasing things about Bold. They tie strings as they move through the place in their own way.

Sketch with points and string.

Setup with points of interest and wires.

Thread being tied to a wire.
Safe Stage
An physical extension of the warm, safe, and nurturing environment created at Bold that can be set up outside the building.

Sketch of closed space, similar to Bold building.

Colourful projection showing through on the outside.

Lights and soft materials on the inside.
Reflection
By not trying to make something perfect or that relates to the project, I feel that it allowed us to effectively explore just the materials. Although we used the insights to make ideas, we felt that they don't convey what Bold is completely, and it might be better to engage with Bold more closely and use their inputs.
